Shapes which are congruent are identical in size and shape

For triangles, this means that:
· Each corresponding pair of angles is equal
<A = <M      <B = <N      <C = <P

· Each corresponding pair of sides is equal
AB = MN      AC = MP      BC = NP

In total, there are six pairs of equal measurements:
3 pairs of angles and 3 pairs of sides

We say that the triangles are congruent using the symbol

Δ ABC       Δ MNP

Triangle ABC is congruent to triangle MNP

Recognizing Congruent Triangles

Obviously if you are presented with two triangles where all six measurements are given as equal, you can conclude that the triangles are identcal:

But it isn't necessary to know that all six pairs of things are equal in order to conclude that the triangles really are identical. There are shortcuts! Move on to page two >>>
