Lactic acid molecule has the chemical formula C3H6O3. It's an organic acid that's white in solid form and colourless in liquid form. Lactic acid, also known as lactate, is produced in muscles during strenuous exercise when the body breaks down glucose and other carbohydrates for energy.

It can be found in milk and also in other food products such as meat and beer. It's used in making plastics, as well as in textile dyeing and leather tanning. Lactic acid is widely used in the food industry as a preservative, flavour enhancer, and an acid adjustment.

Lactic acid is the predominant acid in the vagina, and is responsible for the vaginal pH in most healthy women to be under 4.5. The majority of the lactic acid comes from lactic acid–producing bacteria. Lactic acid inhibits the growth of (or kills) potential microbial pathogens, while also preventing inflammation.
